CCU is dedicated to protecting the ecological and cultural integrity of the Arctic for present and future generations. We work to promote understanding and cooperation among Arctic indigenous peoples, environmental organizations, and other diverse interests, to raise public awareness of and build a global constituency for the Arctic, and advocate for environmental protection, sustainability, and human rights to create and implement policies, mechanisms, and institutions beneficial to the region. Engaging Arctic Voices Initiative
CCU is continuing our efforts to communicate the findings of the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment (ACIA) through our Engaging Arctic Voices initiative. Arctic indigenous peoples—eye witnesses on the front-lines of global warming today—are particularly well suited to convey the stark reality and immediacy of climate change to the American public. CCU will partner with Arctic indigenous leaders in two initiatives:
  • Our Arctic Voices Global Warming Tour brought Arctic indigenous leaders to key states in the policy debate on climate change to address audiences from the faith, student, indigenous and civic communities.

  • The Arctic Resource Center is a plan to build sustainable support for Arctic issues in Washington, D.C., and would allow indigenous peoples to bring their stories and voice their concerns directly to policy-makers. Click here to learn more.

Arctic Climate Impact Assessment: Released November 9, 2004
Mandated by Arctic Council Ministers form the eight Arctic nations-Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States-meeting at Barrow, Alaska in 2000, the Assessment is the most comprehensive regional study of climate change ever undertaken. Urgent action is required both to mitigate the effects of global warming and to support and bolster the adaptive capacity of Arctic stakeholders, particularly indigenous communities, threatened by climate impacts.
